Dr. Ram Gupta Receives MGA Leadership Award

The IEEE AESS is pleased to announce that Dr. Ram Gopal Gupta (see Fig. 1) is the recipient of the 2011 MGS leadership award with the following citation:
“For his distinguished leadership and outstanding contributions as a volunteer, at the Section and Regional levels, serving the IEEE for the benefit of its members and the engineering profession by popularizing IEEE in local industry and common engineering students”
MGA leadership award is established by the IEEE MGA to recognize sustained leadership in Region, Society, or Board of Governors (BOG) positions for the benefits of the IEEE and its members.

Dr. Gupta has exceptional credentials in one of the most important and growing IEEE market, India, Region 10. He was a Senior Director in the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies and is still active leading there. He used this inherent leadership position to leverage for IEEE to initiate and lead activities that brought together IEEE’s TAB, MGA (RAB earlier), Sections and Chapters for Conferences, Workshops, Distinguished Lectures (DLs), events and meetings across the major sectors of India’s society, academia, industry and government, all to advance India and IEEE. His activities include communications, IT, aerospace, and defense, systems-of-systems, ATM and systems development sectors reflected well on MGA Region 10, IEEE, international communities and IEEE ability to “Advancing Technology for Humanity” (and earlier “Advancing Global Prosperity”).

Dr. Gupta, IEEE senior member for the previous sixteen years, is serving in the BoG of AESS and the BoG of IEEE Photonic Society. He started his IEEE service as (1) Chair of the Joint Chapter IEEE AES COM LEO Society of India Council and achieved the position of Delhi Section Chair and, presently India Council Chair; (2) popularized IEEE technical activities for students, academia, and industry in India; (3) initiated two major IEEE Conferences in Communications and ATM; (4) opened the New Students Branches in engineering to for students’ benefit.

Some of his outstanding awards include: (1) in 2007 Member Board of Governors for IEEE Technology Management Board; Chair-IEEE DELHI SECTION; Editorial Board Member of The Open Aerospace Engineering Journal published by Bentham Science Publishers; (2) in 2006 elected Member of BOG for IEEE AESS. Member of TPC of world largest IEEE Communication Conference: GLOBECOM 2006 and ICC 2007; (3) Outstanding IEEE ComSoc/AESS Chapter for year 2006, 2005, 2003, and 2002 Awards.

As Senior Government officer he has collaborated programmers with the government to popularize IEEE. The innovative efforts have led to the sharp increase in the student’s branches in India and the overall membership growth. After taking as Chair, he retrieved the IEEE AES COM LEO SO CH INDIA from IEEE Disqualified Chapters and achieved the Best Chapter Award from IEEE ComSoc for more than five years. Major initiatives include “IEEE ICPWC General Chair” in India since 1996 with participants from 22-25 countries.

Dr. Gupta was the Organizer and Chair “IEEE Seminar on Aeronautical Navigation & Communications: Present and Future,” August 17-18, 2006; Fellow and Life Member of the TEB for the technical publications of the Largest Profession Body in India IETE (Institution of Electrical and Telecommunication Engineers); Member of the nomination committee for an international award worth US $800,000 for Techno-entrepreneurship development instituted by The TAKADA FOUNDATION, Japan; Electronics and IT Expositions (ELITEXs) etc. His numerous reports enhance the vision on the “Role of United Nations and Specialized Agencies for Developing Electronic Industry in Developing Countries.”
